9 Unique Ways To Fill Mom’s Plate This Mother’s Day
A client recently asked for ideas on how to celebrate his wife on Mother’s Day without the activities revolving around food. As a mom, my first thoughts were, “don’t make me cook, don’t make me clean, and please, please, please don’t leave all the undone cooking and cleaning until the day after Mother’s Day.” My fellow coach’s first thought was, “Water balloons!” We are all a little different, but the bottom line is, we don’t necessarily want to make any decisions, and love and laughter are at the top of our lists. Below are some ideas on how to celebrate the moms who are trying to be a little healthier and don’t want the focus to be on food this Mother’s Day. If you live in the Washington, DC area like most of us around here do, there is plenty to choose from.
Book a Spa Day
Treat Mom to a massage, a manicure, a pedicure, or a blowout. Make the appointment for her and send her along her way. It’s one less decision she will have to make and she will be grateful for the pampering. Send her alone, or join her for a fun spa day.
Hike, kayak, canoe, paddle board, or go on a family bike ride. We are surrounded by rivers and mountains in the DC area. If your mom is the outdoorsy type, she will love being active with her family.
Pick-Your-Own Farm Fun
Farms are abundant in Virginia and Maryland, and many are as close as 45 minutes away. Mom will love being outdoors in the sun amongst nature’s bounty. This activity is especially fun if you want the kids to get in on the action. Choose a flower farm, a lavender farm, or a pick-your-own fruit farm. When you get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom or arrange the flowers together with your selections.
Tour Historic Sites
We have some really great options in the DC area – battlefields, monuments, historic towns, and more. If your mom loves history, gather the family for a tour of nearby historic sites. The beautiful weather and landmarks are sure to make her day even more memorable, and they’ll make for some great snapshots.
Paint and Sip
If you have an older crew, sign yourselves up for a sip and paint event. You’ll sip, laugh and take home a beautiful creation to remember the day.
Make Your Own Candle
The Paddywax Candle Bar in Reston provides a fun way to gather, connect, and create lasting memories with their candle pouring workshops to create a candle that is unique to you. If you are not near one of our locations, check out the online options for some DIY candle fun.
Outdoor Movie Night
Bring the magic of summer nights and the nostalgia of old drive-ins to your backyard with an outdoor movie night. Dress up the yard, deck or patio with string lights, throw pillows, and blankets. Serve light snacks and drinks and put on Mom’s favorite movie.
Escape Room or Scavenger Hunt
A little family competition, anyone? An Escape Room is fun if the weather isn’t great. Another option is to have the kids make a scavenger hunt list and then split the family into teams and have them complete the list. We love the idea of including activities like “take a video of yourself listing three things you love most about Mom” or “find a flower outside to give to Mom”.
Who doesn’t love a good song? Break out the old hairbrush microphone and channel your inner rock star. You can elevate your karaoke experience with an at-home system that’ll keep the entire family entertained for hours. We use the old Wii Rockband game in my house.
Whatever you decide to do this Mother’s Day, take the pressure off Mom and give her lots of love. She will love spending extra quality time with all her favorite people.
